Deadly Plant Discovered on Shannon Lake Road in Side Lake, MN

Residents and visitors of the Side Lake area are urged to use caution following the confirmed discovery of water hemlock (Cicuta maculata) growing along Shannon Lake Road. This plant, found in wet roadside ditches and low-lying areas, is considered one of the most poisonous in North America. Even small amounts can be lethal to humans, pets, and livestock. Water hemlock is easily mistaken for harmless wildflowers or edible plants, but it contains a powerful neurotoxin called cicutoxin, which causes seizures, respiratory failure, and often death.

Water hemlock is typically 3–6 feet tall with hollow, purple-streaked stems, jagged leaves, and umbrella-like clusters of small white flowers. The roots are especially dangerous. Authorities and local naturalists urge everyone to avoid contact with the plant and to educate children and others who may frequent the area. If you suspect you’ve encountered water hemlock, do not touch it—take a photo from a safe distance and report it to local officials or your county extension office. The link to report invasive species can be found here: https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/invasives/terrestrial/report.html. Public awareness is key to preventing accidental poisonings and protecting both people and animals in the Side Lake Community.
